What Is a Modular Acoustic Studio?

A modular acoustic studio is an engineered architectural enclosure that controls sound transmission (soundproofing), background noise and internal reverberation for broadcast, podcast, voice-over, recording and music. Unlike adding foam or panels to an existing room, it combines room-within-a-room sound isolation with internal acoustic treatment, so both what enters or leaves the room and how it sounds inside are engineered together. This makes recording studio soundproofing repeatable rather than approximate.

Sound Isolation vs Internal Room Acoustics

Two distinct functions: sound isolation (soundproofing) keeps outside noise out and inside sound in, measured by STC and NIC; internal room acoustics controls reverberation and reflections inside the room using absorption. A credible studio needs both; treatment alone does not provide isolation, and isolation alone does not make a room sound good.

Performance is assessed for the complete installed room, not a single wall: doors, windows, ventilation, penetrations, floor and ceiling connections and flanking all matter. IAC uses laboratory-rated components and engineers the project-specific complete-room result.

Modular Acoustic Studio and Space Types

There is no single studio configuration that suits every application. The right acoustic studio design depends on the intended use, available space, required acoustic performance, room configuration, and the level of flexibility needed. The comparison below outlines the main studio types and where each approach is most practical.

Selecting and Integrating a Modular Acoustic Studio

Selection is driven by room use, the sound-isolation and background-noise (NC) target, the internal reverberation target, the building structure and flanking, and ventilation and services. The studio integrates acoustic doors, studio observation windows, floating floors and structural isolation, silent ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and electrical and audio services. Internal links: acoustic doors, acoustic windows, wall and ceiling panels, audiology and vocal booths. Studio ventilation and air conditioning are designed to maintain acoustic performance while providing comfortable airflow. Quiet-Duct® air conditioning silencers and integrated mechanical systems help control noise from ventilation and HVAC equipment without compromising studio functionality.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not find the answer to your specific technical question here, please contact our engineering team directly.

What is the difference between a modular acoustic studio and acoustic wall treatment?

A modular studio provides a complete acoustically rated structure, while wall treatment controls sound within an existing room. IAC modular studios combine acoustic walls, floors and ceilings into a complete studio environment.

Acoustic isolation depends on the studio construction, including single- or double-wall configurations and the complete room design. IAC products and components are laboratory tested to determine the acoustic characteristics at the design stage.

Acoustic studios are available in single- and double-wall configurations, with 70+ standard acoustic component configurations to meet different levels of acoustic isolation. The appropriate construction depends on the requirements of the application.

IAC modular studios are used for Voice-Over, music practice, TV, film and video production, radio, post-production, audio recording, control and editing applications

Yes. IAC modular studios can be dismantled, adapted, reconfigured and re-assembled, allowing structures to be relocated or modified as requirements change.

Yes. Modular components can be assembled into structures of virtually any size and shape, while studios can be designed and built to the required size, shape and specification.
