What Is a Small Anechoic Chamber?

A Small Anechoic Chamber, also known as a Mini Anechoic Chamber (MAC), is a compact acoustic test environment that provides "quasi" free-field conditions within a limited measurement volume. It enables repeatable, accurate measurements of sound power, noise emissions, and the calibration of miniature acoustic devices above its specified low-frequency cut-off.

Note

Free-Field Conditions in Compact Anechoic Acoustic Chambers

A quasi-free-field environment is a defined measurement region in which chamber boundary effects are sufficiently reduced for sound propagation to approximate free-field behavior over a specified frequency range. In compact chambers, this defined measurement volume is a key limitation, with its usable frequency range governed by chamber geometry and acoustic treatment, particularly at lower frequencies.

Acoustic Absorbers for Small Anechoic Chambers

PU Wedges vs. Flat Absorbers

Flat sound-absorbing modular panels vs. PU Wedges

Due to their limited internal volume, small anechoic chambers have a higher cutoff than full-size chambers. Wedge absorbers are therefore primarily used for microphone calibration and audio device testing. For applications requiring only a high-absorptive acoustic enclosure, flat sound-absorbing panels provide a practical solution. These configurations are commonly referred to as Mini Acoustical Chambers or Acoustic Cabinets.

II

Modular Acoustic Systems for Small Anechoic Chambers

MINI-Microdyne™

MINI-Microdyne™ anechoic chambers can be supplied either fully assembled or in knock-down form for easy transportation and on-site installation. Despite their compact dimensions, the double-wall enclosure provides airborne sound isolation while preserving the proven engineering principles of the Microdyne™ chamber system.

III

Small Acoustic Doors and Multi-Compartment Systems

MAC Acoustic Doors

The compact dimensions of small anechoic chambers often require application-specific access solutions for the device under test. Upon request, IAC designs custom access systems with various door configurations, opening mechanism, and access location to meet project-specific testing requirements.

For research applications in biology, medicine, and other laboratory environments, as well as for simultaneous testing of multiple audio devices, IAC develops customized Multi-Compartment Mini Acoustical Chambers featuring high airborne sound insulation and optional RF / EMI shielding.

IV

HVAC and Auxiliary Systems for Small Anechoic Chambers

Airflow Control & Utilities

Upon request, small anechoic chambers can be equipped with HVAC Noise Control systems to provide precise control of temperature, humidity, and air pressure while maintaining the specified acoustic environment.

A wide range of optional accessories is also available, including LED lighting, EMI/RFI power filters, cable feedthroughs, equipment mounting fixtures, adjustable platforms, specimen supports, and custom interfaces designed for the specific test application.

V

Support Frames and Floors for Small Anechoic Chamber

Anti-vibration Stands and Rolling Base

The chamber can be supplied with a heavy-duty mobile caster base, allowing it to be easily relocated between laboratories, production areas, or different test stations. Lockable industrial casters provide secure positioning during operation while maintaining the flexibility to move the chamber when required.

Optional vibration isolation supports minimize the transmission of structure-borne noise into the chamber. The isolation system helps maintain repeatable acoustic test conditions by reducing external mechanical disturbances without affecting chamber accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Mini Anechoic Chamber different from a full-size anechoic room?

A mini chamber focuses on small DUTs, offering fast setup, portability, and lower cost while still providing free-field acoustic conditions appropriate to the device scale. It’s ideal for R&D benches, pilot lines, and QC without building a dedicated room.

Yes. With RF/EMI shielding and RF absorbers (optional), you can evaluate wireless performance, interference, and acoustic behavior in a single enclosure—especially useful for smart audio and IoT devices.

The effective range depends on wedge depth and internal volume. MAC units are optimized for small-device acoustic tests with strong absorption in the core audio band and consistent high-frequency behavior for microphones/speakers. When customers require assertions up to 20 kHz, we include model-based attenuation notes alongside measured data so reviewers understand instrument limits and expected trends

With the right material package, yes. We offer temperature-resilient configurations targeted to –50°C to +120°C when the chamber interfaces with thermal control systems. Tell us your temperature profile so we can select materials, seals, and coatings accordingly.

Most small-device tests align with ISO 3744/3746 methods. On request, we configure setups to support ISO 3745 point measurements, ISO 26101, and customer-required EN/ANSI references for small chamber validation.

We tailor size, RAL color, wedge geometry, penetrations, power/data/RF feedthroughs, windows, ventilation, lighting, mounts, and stands to your DUT and workflow. We also support RF shielding and absorbers as needed.

Yes. We still provide service, spare parts, and technical support for chambers manufactured in the late 1980s
