Key Features

Key Features of NVH Acoustic Test Chambers

Purpose-built environments for accurate, repeatable and standards-ready acoustic testing.

Controlled Acoustic Environment

NVH acoustic test chambers are designed to achieve low background noise levels and controlled high absorptive wall and ceiling conditions, including even true free-field or simulated free-field environments. This ensures accurate and repeatable sound measurements across a wide frequency range.

Integrated Vibration Control & Floating Floor Design

Floating floor systems and structural isolation minimize structure-borne noise and external disturbances, enabling precise noise and vibration analysis. The high-load floor design supports testing of large components and complete vehicles. IAC's proprietary vibration isolation system, combining a reinforced concrete slab with specialized vibration isolators, achieves an extremely low cutoff frequency. Integrated lifting solutions, including 2-post, 4-post, recessed vehicle lifts, and overhead cranes, provide efficient handling and positioning of test specimens.

Flexible Test Integration

Supports seamless integration of chassis dynamometers (2WD/4WD), engine dynamometers, climate environmental simulation systems, RF shielding, EMC testing, electric powertrain rigs, shaker systems, driveline equipment, cooling systems with external chillers and pumping stations, as well as advanced sensors, instrumentation, and control systems for testing within a single acoustic facility.

Standards Compliance & Optimized Test Environment

Designed in accordance with ISO 3744, with optional compliance to ISO 3745 and ISO 26101. The facility incorporates low-noise, low-heat LED lighting delivering a minimum horizontal illuminance of 600 lux, emergency lighting systems, and integrated CCTV and alarm systems to ensure safe operation, regulatory compliance, and optimal testing conditions.

Turnkey Delivery

IAC provides complete single-source responsibility for the entire acoustic test facility, including floating floors, vibration isolation, lifting systems, cooling infrastructure, ventilation and HVAC acoustic solutions. Integration of automation systems and test benches. This turnkey approach eliminates interface risks, guarantees specified acoustic performance, and ensures long-term operational reliability.

Engineering Design

Engineering Acoustic Design of NVH Test Chambers

Our NVH acoustic test chambers employ a modular "room-within-a-room" construction that combines high-performance acoustic isolation with application-specific internal sound absorption. The acoustic treatment is engineered to achieve low background noise levels while providing the absorption characteristics required for each testing application. Depending on customer requirements, the chambers can be configured as highly absorptive quiet rooms or as free-field and hemi-anechoic environments with specified cut-off frequencies and qualified measurement zones, enabling accurate, repeatable, and standards-compliant NVH measurements.

Standard Acoustic Absorbers for NVH Test Chambers

High-Absorptive Environment

Varitone® Sound-absorbing modular panels

Most NVH test chambers are designed as high-absorptive acoustic environments, providing exceptionally low background noise and excellent measurement repeatability without requiring a fully qualified free-field over the entire test volume. By combining Varitone® sound-absorbing panels with Noise-Lock® or Noishield® STC-rated modular panel, the chamber achieves broadband sound absorption and acoustic performance approaching free-field conditions over reflective plane. In most octave bands, the deviation from the inverse-square law is typically only 3–4 dB above the ISO 3745 free-field tolerance, making these chambers an ideal solution for precision NVH development, sound power measurements and automotive component testing. III

Acoustic Doors and Windows for NVH Test Chambers

Anechoic Doors and STC Windows

Each NVH test chambers require specialized acoustic access systems that allow vehicles, powertrains, and large test specimens to enter the facility without compromising its acoustic performance. Acoustic doors, observation windows, and equipment access panels are therefore engineered as integral parts of the chamber enclosure, with door frames, seals, and closures designed to maintain the required sound insulation while matching the geometry and depth of the absorber lining.

Depending on the application, IAC supplies single- and double-leaf acoustic doors, sliding or pivoting vehicle access doors, personnel doors, acoustic windows, and custom service penetrations. Each system is designed to provide reliable operation, long-term sealing performance, and unobstructed access while preserving the low background noise and free-field conditions required for accurate NVH measurements.

IV

HVAC and Exhaust Noise Control for NVH Test Chambers

Environmental Noise Control

Automotive NVH test chambers require carefully engineered HVAC and exhaust noise control systems to maintain stable environmental conditions without affecting acoustic measurements. High-capacity ventilation systems must remove engine heat, supply fresh air, and control temperature, humidity, and airflow while keeping background noise below the chamber's acoustic performance requirements.

IAC designs complete ventilation systems including Quiet-Vent® duct silencers, acoustic air handling units (AHUs), exhaust extraction systems, forced-air cooling ducts, and intelligent control systems. Every intake and exhaust path is acoustically engineered to minimize regenerated noise, allowing full-vehicle and powertrain testing under repeatable operating conditions while preserving the free-field environment inside the chamber.

V

Floating Floors and Dynamometers in NVH Test Chambers

Isolation and Dyno Integration

Automotive NVH test chambers require careful isolation of the chamber structure, reflective floor, and chassis dynamometer system to prevent structure-borne noise and vibration from influencing acoustic measurements. IAC evaluates the site layout, surrounding facilities, dynamometer pit, plant room equipment, and floor slab construction to determine the correct isolation strategy for each project. For more demanding applications, IAC Acousti-Flote™ floating floor systems and spring-mounted concrete slabs can be engineered to reduce vibration transmission while preserving the hard reflective floor surface required for hemi-anechoic and vehicle pass-by measurement conditions.

Dynamometer pits also require engineered ventilation and cooling. Silenced air inlets, pit extract systems, localized cooling ducts, and exhaust ventilation can be integrated to remove heat and fumes while keeping background noise to a minimum during vehicle and powertrain testing.

What is NVH testing used for?

NVH testing is used to evaluate and optimize the noise and vibration behavior of vehicles, components and mechanical systems to improve comfort, durability and perceived product quality. It is a critical part of modern product development and validation.

PlanarChoic is a planar high-performance sound absorber used when a chamber must fulfill simulated free-field and low-background-noise requirements, for example for ISO 3745-oriented measurement conditions. Varitone is a flat absorptive panel concept suited to highly absorptive rooms and engineering-level NVH testing where reverberation control is the key requirement.

Yes, in selected cases. A combined NVH and EMC chamber is most relevant for pre-compliance testing or smaller laboratories where two dedicated facilities are not practical. The feasibility depends on acoustic targets, shielding effectiveness, ventilation, penetrations, grounding strategy and shared use requirements.

Useful inputs include the object under test, room dimensions, target standards, background noise requirements, floor loading, dynamometer or rig interfaces, HVAC requirements, access dimensions, EMC needs and site constraints.
